Abortion access among Indigenous Peoples in Canada

    This research project was funded by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s (SSHRC) Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative. Co-led by Renée Monchalin and Astrid V. Pérez Piñán, with support of Research Assistants Willow Paul and Madison Wells, this research is done in partnership with Abortion Support Services Atlantic, ekw'í7tl doula collective, Northern Manitoba Abortion Support, and Northern Reproductive Justice Network. The goal of this research is to build on existing community knowledge and strengths, advance knowledge around, and remove barriers to abortion services for Indigenous Women, Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual, plus (LGBTQIA+) People in Canada.

Pérez Piñán, with support of Research Assistants Willow Paul and Madison Wells, and guided by an Indigenous Advisory Committee, this research was an exploratory pilot study with the goal of advancing knowledge around access to and experiences with culturally safe abortion services among Indigenous women and Two-Spirit people in Canada.
